The landscape around Galena is one of the things that surprises people most. Drive just a few minutes outside downtown, and the streets give way to wooded ridges, deep valleys, limestone bluffs, and long views that stretch toward the Mississippi River. This corner of northwest Illinois is part of the Driftless Area, a region largely bypassed by the most recent Ice Age glaciers. Instead of being flattened, the land remained rugged, which is why the scenery here feels so different from much of Illinois.
That geography makes this one of our favorite places to be in fall. The hills above the river turn red, orange, and gold, and many of the best Mississippi River views are close enough to Galena to fit easily into an afternoon.

Horseshoe Mound Preserve
Horseshoe Mound Preserve is one of the best places near Galena for a wide, uninterrupted look at the surrounding countryside. Located just outside town on Blackjack Road, the nearly 200-acre preserve is managed by the Jo Daviess Conservation Foundation and is free to visit.
The property rises to roughly 1,063 feet in elevation, about 400 feet above Galena and the Mississippi River valley. On a clear day, you can see across Illinois, Iowa, and Wisconsin, with views that take in Galena, distant river country, wooded ridges, and the distinctive mounds that define the Driftless landscape.
Several overlooks are spread across the preserve. The Cooke and Mills Family overlooks sit at opposite ends of the property, while the Spiroff Overlook, added in 2021, is reached by a trail through restored oak savanna and unusual rock formations. The trails are short enough that you do not need to devote half a day to the visit, which makes Horseshoe Mound especially easy to work into a weekend itinerary.
This is also one of our favorite places to see fall colors in Galena. Rather than looking at one hillside or one stretch of road, you get a broad view across the valley as the entire landscape begins to change. Keep in mind that the preserve closes seasonally in winter and may also close on select fall hunting dates, so check current information from the Jo Daviess Conservation Foundation before heading out. Chestnut Mountain Resort
For a closer look at the Mississippi itself, head to Chestnut Mountain Resort. About 20 minutes from downtown Galena, the resort sits high on a wooded bluff directly above the river, and much of the property is oriented toward the view.
During the warmer months, the 2,050-foot Alpine Slide runs down the mountain toward the Mississippi. The chairlift ride back to the top is part of the appeal, giving you a broad look over the river valley and across three states.
The Soaring Eagle Zipline offers another way to see the landscape, carrying one or two riders along an 800-foot course above the slopes with open views of the Mississippi River Valley. You do not have to get on a ride to enjoy the scenery, though. Summit Food and Spirits overlooks the river, making it an easy place to sit down for a meal while taking in one of the most accessible Mississippi River views near Galena.

Mississippi Palisades State Park
If you have more time and want to spend part of the day hiking, Mississippi Palisades State Park is the strongest choice on this list. The park lies about 30 minutes south of Galena along the Great River Road and covers roughly 2,500 acres near the confluence of the Mississippi and Apple rivers.
The landscape is more rugged here than at the other stops. A 15-mile trail system climbs through wooded ravines and along bluff tops, with developed overlooks including Ozzie’s Point, Louis’ Point, Lookout Point, and Oak Point. Some trails are short enough for a quick walk to a viewpoint, while others let you spend considerably more time exploring the park.
Mississippi Palisades also has designated rock-climbing areas at Sentinel, Twin Sisters, and Indian Head. In fall, the wooded bluffs become one of the most dramatic places in the region to see color above the river, which is why we often recommend it to guests looking for outdoor things to do near Galena in the fall.
The scenery changes again in winter. Bald eagles can sometimes be seen feeding along the Mississippi, particularly in January and February when ice conditions push birds toward open water.
