Located on the fourth floor of Jail Hill Inn, Suite 401 occupies an area that once housed female prisoners. The suite’s angled ceiling is part of the inn’s distinctive red mansard roof. The exposed beams of the suite are original and all lead to the middle of the building where one giant beam supports the inn’s roof. These beams allow for an airy, open floor plan and varied ceiling heights, which create depth and character.
Grab a book, catch up on movies or just relax in the alcove bedroom or on the chaise lounge in front of the traditional brick fireplace. Views from Suite 401 include the neighboring property and the backyard of Jail Hill Inn. This is guest suite is very expansive and is a popular choice for guests planning a getaway from Chicago or other parts of the Midwest.

A stay at Jail Hill Inn in Galena is truly a stellar B&B experience from the moment you step through the front door. As a ‘repeat offender’, the bed and breakfast is our go-to place for special romantic getaways and an ‘escape’ from the business of home-life balance. The ambiance that reflects Matthew’s signature style and his eye for detail is beyond perfection. His renovation and preservation of the former Galena jail includes so many subtle and historical details woven into the individual design of each room; they give life to the history of the building, the people and the town.
Matthew is the accomplished innkeeper, the consummate concierge, and the master chef; you will not find anyone else with his talents and skills that will provide an experience that is wonderfully memorable. Jail Hill Inn is THE BEST! Enjoy reading the guests’ entries found in the journals in the rooms. Plan your day accordingly around the 3-course early brunch (and oh, the bacon, it is truly a culinary experiment that pleases the palate) and the afternoon wine and amuse-gueule paired with sweets baked fresh daily and usually served fresh from the oven. In all, the Jail Hill Inn and the many activities in and around Galena make for one of the most ideal places to visit you will ever find. Kudos to Matthew!
